Hello.
I’m a local journalist who’s as passionate about fostering community through journalism as I am about finding innovative ways to preserve and sustain that work. I’ve spent more than 20 years working at Iowa newspapers, from rural weeklies, to fast-paced dailies. I’ve found creative ways to tackle local news challenges, and I’ve brought newsrooms along as the news industry — and our audience’s expectations — continue to evolve.
As a newsroom leader, I’ve built complex coverage plans, collaborated across my own organization and with others to amplify diverse perspectives, and I’ve been a voice for the newsroom during strategic planning processes. I take pride in supporting colleagues to help them meet and exceed their personal goals.
Before stepping into leadership roles, I built a foundation as a many-skilled reporter. My work has included investigative and feature reporting, photography, video production, audio editing, and data reporting.
I spend a lot of time thinking, reading and talking about the current and future state of local news. I’m always on the hunt for new ideas I can scale to fit our newsroom. I like to experiment with new tools, audience engagement and workflows to find the right chemistry for our newsroom and our audience. I’m happiest when I’m learning new things, be it how to build a spreadsheet to analyze data, how to use social media to connect with people about the news, or how to collaborate with community partners to find ways to sustain local news.
No matter a community’s size, it deserves quality news that’s responsive to its information needs.
